Venice Introduces €10 Tourist Tax: What Jetsetters Need to Know Before Visiting in 2025

Dreaming of gondola rides and Aperol Spritzes by the Grand Canal? You’re not alone — Venice continues to be one of Europe’s most magnetic travel destinations. But if you're planning a quick day trip in 2025, there’s a new rule you’ll want to know about before landing in Italy’s floating city.

Starting April 18th, Venice has introduced a €10 daily tourist tax — officially known as the Venice Access Fee — aimed at managing the ever-growing wave of visitors and protecting the city’s ancient charm.

This move follows last year’s trial of a €5 entry fee and other crowd-control strategies, like limiting walking tours to 25 people and banning megaphones. Now, from April 18 to May 4, and again every weekend through the end of July, you’ll need to pay €10 to access Venice between 8:30am and 4:00pm — unless you’ve booked overnight accommodation in the city.

How to Pay the Venice Tourist Fee

This isn’t something you can just wing on arrival. You’ll need to pre-pay through a dedicated online portal. If you’re organized enough to book at least four days in advance, you’ll score a 50% discount, dropping the fee to just €5. That’s what we call a smart travel hack.

Importantly, this fee doesn’t apply to kids under 14 or anyone staying overnight — but be aware, the existing Venice overnight tax (up to €5/night) still applies for up to five nights.

Why Venice Is Doing This

This isn't just a cash grab. Venice is actively trying to combat over-tourism, which threatens its fragile infrastructure and iconic sites like St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace. Between this, the 2021 ban on large cruise ships, and the existing hotel taxes, it’s clear the city is serious about preserving its heritage — while still welcoming thoughtful, respectful visitors.

If Venice is on your 2025 travel bucket list, factor in this new cost — and plan accordingly. It's still absolutely worth the trip. Just consider staying a night or two, not only to avoid the tax, but to experience the magic of Venice once the day crowds disappear.
